Preliminary Treatment

Diagram of Preliminary Treatment Process

The treatment process begins after the wastewater enters the facility through a 72-inch diameter pipe. The wastewater flows via channels through mechanical barscreens that remove debris from the water. This debris, or "screenings," is rinsed, then de-watered before being taken to the City Landfill.

The wastewater is pumped uphill to the Grit Removal and Pre-aeration Facility, where grit (inorganic solids, such as sand, eggshells, etc.) is removed from the wastewater and pumped to another building for final processing. Air is also added here to "freshen" the wastewater and the micro-organisms it contains.
