Street Cleaning

Several different services help ensure clean city streets.

Sweeping
Street sweepers are used on paved streets that have curbs and gutters. They remove trash and litter to minimize the impact on the storm water systems. Two one-person crews work at night on major thoroughfares and the Central Business District, and five crews work during the day to cover fixed routes to residential areas (one operator per truck).

Flushing
High-pressure streams of water are used on streets to move debris to the curb so that the sweeper can subsequently clean it. Service is available to private developers for a fee.

Island Cleaning
This service involves collecting trash and other debris from assigned routes on islands / medians and underpasses. Additionally, this unit responds to emergencies and other requests, along with supporting special events. One crew with three maintenance workers staffs this unit.

Load-All Truck
This service picks up sweeper dumps for transport to the City landfill. This allows the sweepers to continue their activities with minimal lost time for travel. Additional functions include scraping up wash-outs in streets and underpasses, removing spills, cleaning up garbage at the vehicle wash pits, shingle pick-up, cleaning of illegal dumps along right-of-ways, and picking up large dead animals. One crew, made up of one operator and one maintenance worker, staffs this unit.
