  • yard waste

When is my garbage collection day?
Call 373-CITY (2489) to find out. Collection schedules may change during holiday weeks. View the holiday collection schedule.

What can I do if I have too much garbage to fit in my green container?
The City uses an “automated” garbage collection system that does not allow collection crews to pick up bagged overflow garbage or trash. Extra bags of household garbage are not collectedMuch of what is thrown into the green garbage containers may be accepted in the City's recycling program. The best defense against overflowing garbage is “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.” Check the list of recyclable items before you throw possible recyclables into the garbage.

If you consistently generate lots of trash, you may purchase a second green trash can by calling 373-CITY (2489). A one-time charge will appear on your utility bill. There is a limit of two green cans per location.

How do I prepare yard waste for collection?

    1) Can it – Put it into your own 32-gallon metal or plastic trash can;
    2) Bag it – Put it into heavy-duty, clear plastic bags; or
    3) Bundle it - Bundle limbs and brush into lengths of five feet or less with string.

Visit the yard waste page for more details. All cans, bags and bundles should weigh less than 50 pounds. During the fall season only, there is a loose leaf collection program. During the remainder of the year, leaves must be canned or bagged to be collected.

How do I dispose of an old appliance?
Call 373-CITY (2489) to schedule an appliance pickup.

How do I dispose of paint, batteries, household chemicals and old electronics?
Take them to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center at 2750 Patterson St., open Wednesday through Friday from 10 am to 6 pm, and on Saturdays from 8 am to 2 pm.

What materials are recyclable in Greensboro?
Greensboro’s recycling program accepts: plastic bottles and jugs (like soda bottles, milk jugs, and water bottles); glass food and beverage containers; clean, dry cardboard; chipboard (paperboard like cereal and cake mix boxes); newspaper, magazines, and office paper; aluminum, tin/steel cans; and empty aerosol cans. You may place all of these items together in your brown recycling container or recycling dumpster at any City recycling drop site. Greensboro businesses can also recycle these items, with the exception of glass.
