Historic Preservation
The City promotes the preservation of historic properties and areas of Greensboro in a variety of ways.
The City maintains a qualified Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) and operates the Historic District Program in the Charles B. Aycock, College Hill and Fisher Park neighborhoods.
Greensboro participates in the Guilford County Landmark Property Program. Sixty-eight properties in Greensboro are protected through local Landmark designation. Owners of Landmark properties are eligible for a deferral of up to 50 percent of their property taxes.
The City also maintains a comprehensive survey of historic resources. First conducted in 1975, the Historic Resources Inventory was updated in 1990 and again in 2007.
The City provides funding for nominations to the National Register of Historic Places for several neighborhoods and individual properties. Listing in the National Register makes an owner eligible for federal and state tax credits and provides incentive for the rehabilitation of landmarks such as Pomona High School and L. Richardson Hospital.
The City provides limited financial assistance to Preservation Greensboro Incorporated (PGI) and its subsidiary Architectural Salvage of Greensboro (ASG). PGI is a nonprofit organization that provides services that support historic preservation in the community. ASG is a nationally recognized volunteer entity whose purpose is to save and recycle materials from historic structures when they are remodeled or demolished. Proceeds from the sale of materials are used to encourage appropriate treatment of architectural features through restoration awards.
