Previous Updates on the Glenwood Neighborhood Plan
The following entries chronologically document the process through which the Glenwood Neighborhood Plan was developed. For current information about the Glenwood Neighborhood Plan, return to the main page.

Revised Glenwood Neighborhood Plan
Many public comments were received during the extended 75-day review and comment period.  Based on these comments, the Draft Glenwood Neighborhood Plan has been revised. This revision is intended to better reflect the preferences and priorities of Glenwood stakeholders. Because the complete Revised Draft Plan including maps is a large file (33 MB), it is also available without the maps, each of which may be downloaded individually:

Many residents, property owners, business leaders, clergy, and other Glenwood stakeholders have participated in developing the Glenwood Neighborhood Plan. Throughout the 75-day public review and comment period, numerous comments were submitted. These comments have been collected in a Comments Summary.

Draft Glenwood Neighborhood Plan

Public Review and Comment Period extended through January 2, 2008

The Greater Glenwood Neighborhood Association (GGNA) and the Greensboro Department of Housing & Community Development (HCD) have prepared a draft of the Glenwood Neighborhood Plan for public review and comment. To provide additional opportunities to hear from a broad range of Glenwood neighbors, the public review and comment period has been extended through Wednesday, January 2, 2008. The Draft Plan will be officially presented at a pair of neighborhood meetings -- everyone is invited to attend either or both of these meetings:

Printed copies of the draft plan are now on display for public inspection at several locations throughout Glenwood. The draft plan document is also available for download on this webpage.  The complete draft plan document, including maps is a large file (34 MB), so it is also available without the maps, each of which may be downloaded individually. In addition, a convenient executive summary of the Draft Plan is now available.

During November 2007, two public open house meetings were held at Peck Elementary School to formally present the plan to the neighborhood. The meetings included a slideshow presentation, and provided an opportunity for Glenwood's residents, property owners, business leaders, and other stakeholders to learn more about the draft plan and to express their opinions. These meetings were very well attended by an energetic group of Glenwood neighbors. Not counting City staff, a total of nearly 70 individuals attended these two sessions. A summary of comments and issues discussed during those meetings or submitted since the meetings is now available.

Glenwood Neighborhood Plan Process – Next Steps

Following the close of this extended public review and comment period, two additional public open house meetings will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2008 and Tuesday, January 8, 2008. Final revisions to the Draft Glenwood Neighborhood Plan will then be made to reflect public comments and input received. The Greater Glenwood Neighborhood Association Board will then consider adopting the plan.

Once the plan has been adopted by GGNA, it will be submitted for review and recommendation by the Greensboro Planning Board. Following this recommendation, the Greensboro City Council will hold a public hearing to consider adopting the Glenwood Neighborhood Plan as the City’s official decision-making policy document for the Greater Glenwood Neighborhood. The resulting plan will help make Glenwood a great place to live, work, and play, now and for future generations.

Glenwood Neighborhood Plan - Phase 2 Public Meetings

The second phase of the Glenwood Neighborhood Plan began in February, 2007. The focus in this phase was crafting a vision for Glenwood’s future and developing draft goals and objectives to achieve that vision. Phase 2 began with a pair of public meetings for residents, property owners, business leaders and other stakeholders to collaborate with City staff, held on February 27 and March 3.

In the next phase of the planning process, the Greater Glenwood Neighborhood Association leaders will collaborate with staff from the Department of Housing & Community Development to prepare a draft of the neighborhood plan.

Glenwood Neighborhood Sub-Area Meetings

In follow up to the successful Glenwood Neighborhood Plan Kickoff event on November 4, 2006, the Department of Housing and Community Development, in partnership with the Greater Glenwood Neighborhood Association, held a series of meetings focused on the four sub-areas of Glenwood, on December 6, 11, 12, and 14, 2006.

These meetings provided an opportunity for residents, property owners, business owners, and others in the sub-areas to:

  • Learn how Glenwood is growing and changing.
  • Learn about the unique aspects of these areas.
  • Help make Glenwood great with your ideas.
  • Review the public input received at the kickoff.
  • Be a part of planning for Glenwood's future.

During these meetings, participants were asked several questions, to which they provided written responses: 'What would you change about Glenwood?' 'What should the City do to improve Glenwood?' and 'What do you like about Glenwood?' Here is a summary of those responses.

Also during these meetings, a series of maps of the Glenwood neighborhood was presented, on which participants could mark the following features: their home, their workplace, their favorite places, places they visit often, Glenwood's gateways, and scary or ugly places. Here is a summary of those responses.

Glenwood Neighborhood Plan Kickoff a Huge Success!

On November 4, 2006, the City of Greensboro and the Greater Glenwood Neighborhood Association held an open house at Peck Elementary School to launch the Glenwood Neighborhood Plan Project. More than 50 adults and about 10 children attended. During this meeting, City staff received significant input and feedback from attendees. On a series of six maps, participants were asked to indicate:

  • Where they live in Glenwood
  • Where they work in or around Glenwood
  • What places in Glenwood are their favorites
  • What places in Glenwood they visit often
  • What places in Glenwood are scary or ugly
  • Where Glenwood's main entrances are

See a summary of the feedback on this map.

In addition to the maps, feedback was also gathered on two flipcharts, in response to the following questions:

  • What would you change in Glenwood?
  • What should the City do to make Glenwood better?

See the responses to these questions in this document.
