Jonesboro / Scott Park Neighborhood
Jonesboro / Scott Park has been a middle-class residential neighborhood for more than 100 years. Located north of East Market Street between US 29 and English Street, the neighborhood is facing challenges brought about by a changing economy and changes in adjacent neighborhoods. HCD, the neighborhood, and the East Market Street Development Corporation have started a neighborhood planning process to bring updated infrastructure, housing, and a community rebirth to the area.
Neighborhood History
The neighborhood, originally known as Jonesboro, began in the early 1900s next to Immanuel Lutheran College, which closed in 1961 and was subsequently torn down. In 1918, the area was platted and developed as Scott Park by the J.E. Latham Company. The neighborhood is still known by both names. The neighborhood continued to develop as NC A&T University, originally known as the Agricultural and Mechanical College for the Colored race, grew along its border.
The Neighborhood Today

Today the neighborhood is still almost entirely made up of single family residential housing. Three apartment buildings, two churches, and the businesses along East Market Street add variety to the area.
The City is currently improving and landscaping the East Market Corridor, and has successfully assisted Eastside Park and Willow Oaks across East Market Street.
The City and its partners look forward to working with the Jonesboro / Scott Park neighborhood to spread the improvements along East Market Street to the surrounding areas. Please check back to see new developments and reports as they become available.
