College Hill

Troy Bumpuss HouseThe College Hill neighborhood is once again a quiet and safe place where people come to raise their families and rub elbows with a little bit of the city's history. Hard times nearly destroyed the rich architectural heritage of Greensboro's first local historic district. Once, this neighborhood was dominated by absentee-owned apartment houses in substandard condition, and grand old homes were demolished for commercial development. That was before the area was identified as needing assistance and HCD targeted the neighborhood for revitalization in 1978, before historic designation came in 1980, and before College HIll residents and the College HIll Neighborhood Association took up the banner of historic preservation.

With the City's support and funding assistance, residents have rehabilitated many splendid late 19th Century homes. Dilapidated housing on nearby McGee Street was removed, and five new single family homes and 30 condominiums were built. Decorative street signage and lighting have enhanced this refurbished neighborhood.

Wafco MillsStreetscape improvements were implemented using bond funds and have added to the historic character of the community as well. The successful revitalization of College HIll has inspired private investment in the area. The historic but neglected Wafco Mills, which was on the brink of demolition, has been renovated.  Wafco Mills and adjoining land is now home to 108 privately built condominiums. The developments feature an architectural style that blends with the neighborhoods historic flavor.

In 1989, the area was also designated as a Municipal Service District, which allows additional tax funds to be used for public right-of-way projects.
