Eastside Park

Eastside Park has become a national model for how communities who work together can change the lives of people. Neighborhood residents made it clear from the start that they wanted to be in charge, and they have worked hard to ensure that the changes in their neighborhood were what they wanted and what would be best for the residents. From forming the original steering committee to selection of homebuilders for new housing construction, residents have made many critical decisions to accomplish the goals necessary to revitalize this neighborhood. 

The neighborhood was instrumental in pursuing and coordinating the construction of the Eastside Park community center in 2002. The center is located at 429 Gillespie Street in the heart of the neighborhood and is home to many neighborhood activities and events including National Night Out and neighborhood festivals and fund raisers.

• Purchased and demolished more than 50 dilapidated houses
• Conveyed 60 lots to nonprofit housing developers
• Rehabilitated the 13-unit Bingham Street Apartment
• Acquired five lots for construction by nonprofit housing providers
• Dedicated open space and built the Hassell Street extension
• Completed renovation of 40 Alexander Homes apartments

Current Development Activities:

• In August 2008, three parcels were sold to Youth Focus for the development of My Sister's House. The development is occurring in conjunction with a partnership between the Redevelopment Commission, Youth Focus, UNCG Urban Design Studio, and YWCA.  Development plans are in the process of approval and construction should begin in 2009.
• In August 2008, a groundbreaking for the Arbor Court Townhomes Project occurred. There are three parcels on Spencer Street that have been sold to Habitat for Humanity and will be developed as 20 affordable, for-sale townhomes. Construction should be completed in 2009.
