Organizational Structure

The director oversees the management and operations of Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department, provides support to the Friends of Greensboro Parks and Recreation Foundation and oversees departmental marketing efforts.

The deputy director oversees administrative services for budget, finance, human resources, special projects, and technology, responsible for the department's customer service delivery and special event planning throughout the city. 

Community Recreation Services

The division is responsible for providing a wide variety of recreational programs, services, and facilities which enhance quality of life and individual and community well being. Facilities managed and programmed by this division include: 11 community recreation centers; three watershed parks (lakes); four public swimming pools; 66 tennis courts; 92 athletic fields; the City Arts Drama and Music Centers; Caldcleugh Multicultural Arts Center; Greensboro Cultural Center; Smith Senior Center; Greensboro Sportsplex; Simkins Indoor Sports Pavilion; Gillespie Golf Course; Carolyn Allen Park; and Bryan Park. Specialized programs offered by this area include athletic leagues, fitness and wellness classes, outdoor adventure and environmental education programs, senior citizen programs, therapeutic recreation, inclusion services, and special events. Athletic turf maintenance and Bryan Park soccer complex maintenance are also handled by this area. Facilities within this division generate over $70 million in annual economic impact for Greensboro.

Planning and Project Management

The division coordinates departmental efforts in the areas of strategic and long-range planning, Capital Improvement Program, Capital Life Cycle Plan, and future recreational bond referendums with regards to open space, greenways, parkland and facilities, as well as oversees the Departmental Safety Administrator, who develops, maintains and administers a comprehensive risk management program for the department. This division's services include coordination and management of master planning, construction oversight of new parks and facilities, and oversight of renovations and improvements to existing parks and facilities.

Park Management and Operations
Ron McMillan, Division Manager, 336-373-7539 

The division oversees the operation, management, and maintenance of the department’s parks, gardens and special facilities, which include regional and neighborhood parks, public gardens, trails and greenways, city cemeteries. The area also provides logistical support and heavy equipment for the department’s programs and facilities, implements park improvement projects, and manages the use of the department’s special event equipment such as the Show Wagon. Largely as a result of this division, for the first time the department ranked within the Trust for Public Land’s national listing for park facilities and amenities in 2015.
