Operation Bed Roll Honored by Recycling and Green Industry Groups
Operation Bed Roll and Greensboro Field Operation’s Recycling Educator Tori Carle have been recognized by two industry groups for encouraging local residents to transform non-recyclable plastic bags into sleeping mats for the homeless.
The Triad Branch of US Green Building Council gave Carle its Fearless Leader Award for an Emerging Professional Under 30 for her work creating and leading Operation Bed Roll. The Carolina Recycling Association (CRA) gave Operation Bed Roll its 2017 award for an Outstanding Program. Each year, the CRA gives this award to a select few programs to highlight organizations that have gone above and beyond to increase recycling awareness, promote waste reduction, and make their communities better places to live.
Operation Bed Roll taught Greensboro residents that plastic shopping bags cannot be recycled under the City’s residential recycling program and encouraged residents to keep those bags out of the landfill by reusing bags to make plastic bag yarn sleeping mats. Over the course of the six-month project, more than 3,000 residents participated and an estimated 147,700 plastic bags were kept out of the landfill.
Greensboro Field Operations will continue the Operation Bed Roll in 2017. For more information about how to participate, visit Operation Bed Roll online.
