History of Griffin Recreation Center:

The 15,000-square-foot Griffin community recreation center marks the first such facility built since 1990, when the City opened the Leonard center. Funding for development and acquisition of the land was made possible by the 2000 voter-approved bond referendum. Amenities of the new facility include a gymnasium that can be used for basketball and volleyball, meeting rooms, and a fitness room with cardio equipment, free weights, and strength training equipment.

The scenic 48-acre park and center is named to honor Marylene F. Griffin, a well-known philanthropist who with her husband co-founded the D.H. Griffin Wrecking Company Inc. She also appreciated the value of recreation, as she was an avid golfer. In fact, the center is located on the site of the former Twin Oaks Golf Course.
