Trash, Recycling, & Bulk Collection Service
The City of Greensboro collects residential trash on a weekly basis. Recycling and bulk trash - items too large to fit in your trash container, such as furniture - are collected every other week, on either a red week schedule or a blue week schedule.
Mattresses and box springs are collected by a local company called Purpose Recycling (formerly Mattress GO Round). Simply call the City's Contact Center at 373-CITY (2489) to arrange pick up or you can deliver your mattress/box spring to Purpose Recycling yourself at 2717 Patterson St.
Why is recycling and bulk collection every other week instead of weekly?
Most neighborhoods and residents do not need weekly recycling service or bulk collection. In order to better meet the collection needs of residents and operate more efficiently, the City began every other week collection in 2008.
How do I know which day and week my house is serviced?
Residents can visit this Service Finder and type in their address to find their collection day and weekly red or blue calendar, or they can call the City’s Contact Center at 373-CITY (2489).
What other services are offered?
In addition to trash, recycling and bulk waste collection, the City of Greensboro also provides residents with:
- Yard waste collection on your assigned service day—no appointment needed
- Appliances collection by appointment—call the City’s Contact Center at 373-CITY (2489)
What is bulk trash?
Bulk trash consists of items that are too big to fit in your green trash container, such as furniture, swing sets, and lawn mowers (drained of gas and oil). Keep in mind that extra bags of trash outside your green container are not considered bulk trash and will not be collected by City crews. If you frequently have more trash than you can fit in your container, you may want to purchase an additional trash container by calling the City’s Contact Center at 373-CITY (2489).
Who is Purpose Recycling?
Purpose Recycling is a local company that recycles used mattresses and box springs by repairing, sanitizing, and rebuilding them for resale. The City has a pilot program with Purpose Recycling for them to collect mattresses and box springs from City residents. The program is expected to reduce bulk collection, hauling and disposal costs for the City, and means less bulk waste in our landfill.
