John W. Thompson
Capt. Thompson joined the Greensboro Police Department in 2003 after serving five years with the Asheboro Police Department. Before being appointed Commander of the Resource Management Division, he served as Executive Officer the Vice/Narcotics Division, Executive Officer of Western Division, and Watch Commander. As a sergeant, he was assigned to the Research and Panning Division.
Thompson earned a bachelor of arts degree in business management and a bachelor of science degree in justice and policy studies from Guilford College in 2004. He then earned a master's degree in business administration from Pfeiffer University in 2007 and two years later received his Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate. In 2013, Thompson graduated with honors from the Southern Police Institute’s Administrative Officers’ Course.
"The influences that led me to become a Greensboro Police Officer began with my parents. At a young age, they instilled the importance of service to anyone that was in need. At 19, I became a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon’s), where I had the opportunity to serve the people of New York City for two years," Thompson said. "Upon returning home to North Carolina I wanted to continue to serve, which led me to a career in law enforcement and ultimately becoming a Greensboro Police Officer. After 16 years, I continue to enjoy every opportunity to serve those around me, and take pride in the fact I am a Greensboro Police Officer."
