Greensboro Kids Join National Celebration of Dr. Seuss's Birthday

On March 2, the nation is having a giant birthday party for Theodore Geisel, otherwise known as Dr. Seuss! The author, who would have turned 95 this year, authored dozens of children's books that have taught the joy of reading to generations of children. Some of his most famous works include The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, and Horton Hears A Who.

To honor Dr. Seuss, the National Education Association has organized a Read Across America day, to encourage adults to read with a child for 30 minutes on March 2. The Greensboro Public Library is joining in the effort and asking adults to set aside 30 minutes to read books with a child on that date.

All Greensboro libraries will also have special programs throughout the day. The Cat in the Hat himself will visit libraries to give out bookmarks and stickers. Some libraries will feature local celebrities reading books. Others will have "Green Eggs and Ham" parties and "Cat in the Hat" punch.

Greensboro Public Library Director Sandy Neerman invites everyone to join in the events. "Our goal is to make sure that every child in Greensboro has a chance to enjoy hearing a caring adult read to them. Research indicates that the single most important activity parents can do to promote a child’s success in reading is to read aloud to them and to make sure they keep reading for pleasure, even after they become students. That is why we want every child in Greensboro to have that experience."
