GDOT Director Elected to Serve on International Board 

City of Greensboro Department of Transportation Director Richard Atkins has been elected to serve on the Institute of Transportation's (ITE) International Board for a three-year period beginning January 2000. This selection was announced at ITE's annual meeting held in Montgomery, Alabama in early May. As the Southern District's International Director, Atkins will be responsible for representing the interests of ITE's Southern District, comprised of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia, Kentucky, North and South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

The Institute of Transportation Engineers, is an international educational and scientific association and one of the largest and fastest-growing multi-modal professional transportation organizations in the world. ITE is composed of transportation professionals responsible for safe and efficient surface transportation through planning, designing, implementing, operating and maintaining transportation systems worldwide. The 17-member International Board of Directors establishes policies for the operation of the Institute.

Atkins has served as the Director of the Greensboro Department of Transportation (GDOT) since July 1990 and is responsible for managing traffic engineering, transportation planning, traffic operations, street maintenance, stormwater operations and maintenance, parking, public transit and capital improvement functions. Atkins also serves as Technical Chairperson of the Greensboro Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and has been active in the establishment of the Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation.

Richard Atkins received his BS in Civil Engineering from NC State University in 1966 and a Graduate Transportation Engineering Degree from NC State University in 1968. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in North Carolina. Atkins has received numerous awards from ITE including the Presidents Award in 1995, the Herman J. Hoose Distinguished Service Award in 1997, and the R.V. Moss Distinguished Service Award in 1998.
