"Recycle Greensboro" Sets New Records

Businesses and multi-family communities that participate in the "Recycle Greensboro" program recycled a record 979 tons of material in March, surpassing the previous record by 49 tons.

The tonnage also represents a 19 percent increase in the amount of recyclables delivered during the month of March since the "Recycle Greensboro" program began in 1993. In March 1998, the "Recycle Greensboro" commercial program delivered 824 tons of recyclables to the recycling center.

"Obviously, we are extremely pleased with the continued growth in the commercial recycling sector," said Wayne Turner, Waste Reduction Superintendent. "The sales and service teams have done an outstanding job in the face of some of the worst market conditions that have ever existed."

The increase in recyclables is largely due to an increase in commercial recycling customers. The "Recycle Greensboro" program now collects recyclables from more than 900 businesses, organizations and multi-family communities in the City, adding more than 200 commercial customers in the last 14 months.

The City of Greensboro is one of only a handful of North Carolina municipalities to offer commercial garbage and recycling service. By participating in the "Recycle Greensboro" program, many dumpster customers are able to save money by recycling their paper, cardboard, newspapers, aluminum cans and plastic soda bottles, thereby reducing the amount of waste transported to the landfill.
