Mayor Urges Patience with Howerton Settlement Decision

Greensboro Mayor Carolyn Allen today cautioned citizens that a City Council settlement decision regarding the Howerton case will not be made quickly. She specifically noted that the case is not on tomorrow (Tuesday) night's Council agenda. Opportunities for the public to speak to the issue will not be available until the end of the meeting, during the Speakers From the Floor section. City Council will meet in closed session immediately following the meeting to discuss the case, however, it is unlikely that they will reach a consensus at that time.

Allen further stated that Council members, while sympathetic to the Howerton family, must review numerous issues regarding the case prior to making any decisions.

The Howerton case involves the 1994 shooting of Daryl Howerton by two Greensboro police officers. Although a jury found in favor of the City in a lawsuit brought by Brenda Howerton, Howerton's family, along with the Pulpit Forum and the Racial Justice Network have requested a cash settlement from the City for the Howerton family.
