City Requests Patience with Road Clearing Operations

City of Greensboro transportation crews continue to work around the clock to remove snow from Greensboro streets left from Monday night's storm. Snow removal efforts have been hampered by the unusually large amount of snow received in the past two weeks - an accumulation unprecedented in recent Greensboro history.

Terry Bellamy, Manager of Transportation Operations, notes that Greensboro has received over 15 inches of snow in the past two weeks, with the eastern section of the city experiencing up to 24 inches.

"Snow crews are working 24-hours a day to ensure the safety of Greensboro streets. In the past few weeks, we've put down 2,000 tons of salt and currently we have almost 50 snow removal vehicles in operation. Our crews are focusing their efforts on keeping over 400 miles of main streets open and on clearing the secondary roads that feed into major thoroughfares."

Due to the intensity of recent snows, residential streets will only be plowed if they are causing a particular hazard or if emergency vehicles must travel on them. Bellamy and other city officials urge patience on the part of citizens whose streets are not clear and ask them to assist city efforts by clearing driveway and business entrances if possible, since snow plows can leave snow piled along curbs and driveways.

Trash and recycling collection will not resume until residential streets improve, since city garbage trucks are not equipped to deal with snow and ice. City officials look to sunshine forecast for this afternoon to help melt some of the snow and ice for these streets. For more information on the City's snow removal program, call 373-2076.
