Southside Ground-Breaking Ceremony to be Held April 7
A ground-breaking ceremony for the Southside Development Plan will be held Friday, April 7, at 9 am at the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Gorrell Street. Mayor Keith Holliday will join other members of the Greensboro City Council as well as Bowman Development Group President Robert "Nate" Bowman at the event.
The ground-breaking ceremony will begin construction of the Southside "Traditional Neighborhood" Development which, when complete, will include the restoration of 8 existing houses and construction of up to 34 new single family houses, 38 townhouse units and 16 "live-work" units. The main goal of the Plan is to re-establish the turn of the century neighborhood by preserving and enhancing the historic character of the area.
Bowman Development Group will be the lead developer for the project and estimate a completion date of 18 months to two years. The company has also built traditional neighborhood projects in Huntersville, NC.
Southside Redevelopment bonds were passed by voters in 1990. The City's Department of Housing & Community Development have spent the last several years acquiring land for the project, removing blighted structures and planning streetscape improvements.
"It is a very exciting time when a community can actually see its vision become a reality," said Andy Scott, Director of Housing & Community Development for the City of Greensboro. "The rebirth of Southside is the result of a very intense public planning process with an implementation that stayed true to that vision."
