Glenwood Branch Library Celebrates 5th Anniversary

The Glenwood Branch of the Greensboro Public Library will celebrate its fifth anniversary on May 4 with a day of events and programs for all ages.

"The work of the Glenwood Library is very diverse, from literacy to multicultural programming, from workshops for nonprofits to puppet shows for kids, from resources for neighborhoods to poetry and music performances," said Steve Sumerford, assistant director of the Greensboro Public Library. "The fifth year anniversary celebration will bring all of those different elements together for a full day of festivities."

The schedule of anniversary events includes:

  • 9-10 am Coffee & Doughnuts with the Staff
  • 10 & 11 am Flowers & Bumblebees program for toddlers and preschoolers: Simple stories, fingerplays & more! Bring a very small photo of your child to add to the "Glenwood Garden of Friends."
  • 12:30-2 pm International Potluck Lunch: Enjoy food from around the world! Bring a favorite dish, and join the English as a Second Language Conversation Club.
  • 3:45 pm Cinco de Mayo program for school-age children: Celebrating Mexico with folktales, artifacts, snacks & a piñata.
  • 7:30-9 pm Reception for Glenwood’s supporters, volunteers & friends: Music, poetry, heartwarming stories, refreshments, prizes & good fellowship.

In addition to these special events, customers who visit the Glenwood Branch Library during the week of May 1 are invited to write their impressions about the library in the Anniversary Scrapbook.

During the past five years, Glenwood Library has become a hub for many of Greensboro’s various cultural groups to come together, meet each other and share their cultures.

"When we get the results from the new Census, we will have the data that shows what the staff of the Glenwood Library already knows – that Greensboro is made up of people who come from dozens of different countries, who speak many different languages," Sumerford said. "Our programs at the Glenwood Library have two goals: to help immigrants and refugees develop English skills and cultural literacy, and to help the rest of Greensboro learn more about the strength that comes from diversity."
