Police Urge Caution After Morning Storm
City of Greensboro Police Communications officials urge all residents to exercise caution in the wake of this morning's rainstorm. Citizens should stay off roads if possible and remain at work or home until roadway conditions improve. Power outages have been reported throughout the city, affecting many traffic signals. Trees and limbs have also fallen into streets, making them impassable in areas. Police are working to post signs or officers at intersections but there are currently not enough officers to post at each location.
At this time, emergency officials are conducting damage assessment activities and responding to emergency situations. The storm appears to have caused the worst damage in the northwest section of Greensboro and efforts are being focused in that area. No serious injuries have been reported at this time.
Duke Power reports that high winds and lightning have left approximately 100,000 Duke Power customers without electricity. Those citizens without power should call 1-800-POWERON. To report a downed power line, call Police at 297-5210 or 297-5215. Do not attempt to touch or move a fallen power line or touch any object it is in contact with. Major roadway blockages should be reported to Police Communications at 373-2222. Downed trees blocking minor streets should be called into Parks & Recreation Maintenance at 433-7348 or 433-7349.
Due to safety concerns posed by this morning’s storm, solid waste services provided by the City of Greensboro have been suspended for the remainder of the day. Solid waste officials will review road conditions tomorrow morning to determine whether service will resume at that time.
The Central Library and all branch libraries except for Benjamin, Southwest and Benchmark Square have been closed due to power outages.
Police officials are also requesting that citizens refrain from using cellular phones until further notice in order to allow emergency calls to get through.
