Environmental Services Director Selected

City Manager Ed Kitchen announced today (Wednesday) the selection of Jeryl W. Covington for the position of Environmental Services Director. Covington has served as Acting Director since July 1999. Prior to that, she worked as Technical and Planning Support Manager for the department, a position she held since July 1996.

In announcing his selection, Kitchen said, "Jeri has handled the management of this department admirably for nearly a year during which this part of our operations has experienced significant change. She brings outstanding technical knowledge of environmental issues to the position. We believe she will do a good job with the clear challenges we face in this area in the coming years, and will be a positive addition to our management team."

Covington received a BS in Engineering from NC State University in 1988. She is a registered professional engineer with the state of North Carolina. She is also a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Solid Waste Association of North America and on the Civil Engineering Technology and Advisory Board for GTCC.

As Director, Covington will be responsible for the management of operational functions for solid waste collection and disposal, environmental regulatory support and hazardous materials management. A primary element of Covington's job will be planning for the future closure and post-closure environmental regulations of Phase III of the White Street Landfill, scheduled to take place in 2008.

Covington stated that, "The City of Greensboro is fortunate to have a dedicated workforce to serve the community’s environmental and waste management needs. It has been my own good fortune to work with them during these past months while serving as Director of the Environmental Services Department on an acting basis. I look forward now to the continued opportunity to help maintain and improve the quality of services for our customers, the citizens of Greensboro".

She begins her new position immediately with a starting salary of $78,000.
