In light of the possibility of continued heavy rain in the Greensboro - Guilford County Area, the National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for counties in the Piedmont Area (issued at 5:45 am). Emergency Management Personnel are urging citizens to be aware of the dangers around them and what to do in the case of an emergency

Flood Safety Information

Flash floods and mudflows often follow periods of heavy rain and are the number one thunderstorm killer… nearly 140 fatalities each year.

Look around for evidence of local flooding. There is often little or no warning before a flash flood strikes. Be prepared to move immediately and quickly to higher ground if you see nearby water rising rapidly.

Listen to a battery-operated radio or TV for important emergency safety information, news and weather updates. Stop, look, and listen to improve your chances of escaping flood related injuries.

If Outdoors:

Climb to high ground and stay there.Avoid walking through any floodwaters. If it is moving swiftly, even water six inches deep can sweep you off your feet.

If In A Car:

If you come to a flooded area, turn around and go another way. If your car stalls, abandon it immediately and climb to higher ground. Many deaths have resulted from attempts to move stalled vehicles.
