Handicapped Parking Violation Fine Increase
On January 1, 2001, the NC State Legislature voted to amend the law governing handicapped parking spaces by increasing the maximum fine for violations from $100 to $250. The new fine takes effect June 1 and applies to unauthorized parking in handicapped spaces as well as not displaying proper handicapped parking signage.
The City of Greensboro is working with local property owners to update handicapped parking signage to reflect the recent increase in violation fines. The City’s Planning and Engineering & Inspections Departments are working together to communicate the new amendment as well as update signage. City employees are providing and placing updated decals on existing signs that are not already in compliance. They will also be available to provide names of local vendors to provide updated signs for those that require something other than the decal.
Butch Simmons, Codes Enforcement Manager, says the reason for the city’s involvement is twofold. "We are responsible for communicating the new law and ensuring that all handicapped parking signs reflect the new violation rate. Therefore, we are working to assist both the handicapped accessible community and property managers to update the signage."
