City Implements Mandatory Water Restrictions
Effective Monday, December 3, the City of Greensboro will implement Stage IIA – Level I Warning mandatory water restrictions. Under these restrictions, irrigation by sprinkler is allowed only one day per week on the day of water customer’s garbage pickup. If customers do not have City garbage pickup or they have multiple weekly pickups, they should water on Wednesdays only. Watering by hand-held hoses, containers, or drip irrigation is allowed any day of the week. Penalties for violation of the restrictions are as follows:
Residential Penalties: 1st offense—warning, 2nd offense--$100, Subsequent offenses--$200 Non-Residential Penalties: 1st offense--$200, 2nd offense--$500, Subsequent offenses--$1,000
Greensboro’s Emergency Restriction Plan provides for mandatory restrictions when the water supply drops to 150 days. Water Resources Director Allan Williams states “With the continued water demand and below normal rainfall, we will reach the 150 days supply in our reservoirs by next week. Although we had hoped to avoid mandatory water restrictions, forecasts for the next couple of weeks don’t show substantial likelihood of rain, and it is necessary to impose these restrictions at this time.”
Williams further notes, “Though we are continuing to supplement our supply with water from Reidsville and Winston-Salem, until we get the Randleman Reservoir on line, Greensboro is still at the mercy of weather conditions.” Construction has begun on the Randleman Reservoir, but completion is about 3 years away.
Stage IIA – Level I Warning mandatory restrictions will remain in effect for at least 30 days.
