City Holds First Water Festival for Fifth-Graders March 25, 2002
The City of Greensboro will be holding the 1st Water Festival for Fifth Graders on March 27 and April 10, 2002 from 9 am until 1 pm. More than 600 fifth-graders will attend this festival held at Bryan Park, Lake Townsend Marina and the Townsend Water Treatment Plant. Students will have the opportunity to participate in six fun and exciting hands-on water activities selected by their teachers. Activities focus on the theme of water and support the fifth grade curriculum.
“The Water Festival is an exciting addition to our water resources education program,” states Kristine Williams, Water Conservation Program Coordinator. “Children will have the opportunity to learn how to use water wisely, about the many things that depend on clean water, and how important their role is in preserving and protecting our precious resource.”
Presenters at the festival represent the City of Greensboro Water Resources and Parks and Recreation Departments, Guilford Soil and Water Conservation District, NC Wildlife Resources Commission, NC Cooperative Extension Service and the Guilford County Department of Public Health. Activities will cover a variety of topics including the water cycle, stream erosion and rehabilitation, the City’s water distribution system, how weather affects water supply, water treatment chemicals, water conservation, groundwater, water quality and stormwater runoff, water resources engineering, environmental health, the water treatment process and lake ecology.
