Greensboro Receives Tree City USA Growth Award April 5, 2002
The National Arbor Day Foundation has named the City of Greensboro a Tree City USA. This is the 11th consecutive year that Greensboro has received this national recognition.
The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the National Arbor Day Foundation, a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to tree planting and environmental stewardship, in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service. These sponsors have set four standards that cities must meet in order to become a Tree City USA: the existence of a tree board or department, a community tree ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program, and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
Greensboro is also the recipient of a Tree City USA Growth Award for demonstrating progress in its community forestry program in the areas of: community wide tree event, youth education, arborist workshop, utility partnership, and tree inventory and analysis. The Growth Award was created to recognize environmental improvement and higher levels of tree care in Tree City USA communities.
National Arbor Day Foundation president John Rosenow, states that, "More than ever, today we understand the importance of trees to our cities and towns. Trees help clean our air and water, moderate heat and cold, and bring warmth and grace to our homes."
