City Holds Water Festival for Fifth-Graders
April 9, 2002

The City of Greensboro will be holding the second day of the Water Festival for Fifth-Graders on Wednesday, April 10, from 9:30 am until 1 pm.

“All of the activities were beneficial,” stated one teacher, whose students attended the first day of the event on March 27. Another teacher commented, “The presentations were very hands-on and appropriate for the fifth grade.”

More than 300 fifth-graders will attend this festival held at Bryan Park, Lake Townsend Marina and the Townsend Water Treatment Plant.  Students will have the opportunity to participate in six fun and exciting hands-on water activities.  Activities focus on the theme of water and support the fifth grade curriculum.

“The Water Festival is an exciting addition to our water resources education program,” states Kristine Williams, Water Conservation Program Coordinator.  “Children will have the opportunity to learn how to use water wisely, the many things that depend on clean water, and how important their role is in preserving and protecting our precious resource.”

Presenters at the festival represent the City of Greensboro Water Resources and Parks and Recreation Departments, Guilford Soil and Water Conservation District, NC Cooperative Extension Service and the Guilford County Department of Public Health.  Activities will cover a variety of topics including the water cycle, stream erosion, the city’s water distribution system, water conservation, groundwater, water quality, water resources engineering, the water treatment process and lake ecology.
