Roll Out the Barrels!
June 10, 2002

Would you like to keep your flowers and plants green and conserve water at the same time? Get a rain barrel!

On Saturday, June 22, 2002 the City of Greensboro Water Conservation Office will sell rain barrels from 8 am to 12 noon at the Cooperative Extension Service, 3309 Burlington Road. Only 300 barrels are available, so come early. The barrels will be sold for $50 and officials hope to sell all 300 in one day.

Rain barrels are an old-fashioned, environmentally-friendly way to conserve water. By putting them under a downspout, they collect natural rainwater, which can be used to water plants, flowers, vegetables, etc. Rainwater contains no chemicals or chlorine, and you won't receive a water bill!

These durable green barrels are manufactured by Home & Garden Innovations and are RainCatcher 4000 models. Each holds 54 gallons of water, is 32" high by 24" diameter, weighs 18 pounds and retails for around $100. They have a child safety lid and an aluminum mesh screen to keep out leaves, sticks and other debris.
