Citizens Show Excellent Response to Level II Mandatory Water Restrictions June 25, 2002
The City of Greensboro announced today (Tuesday) that citizen response to the Level II Warning mandatory water restrictions has been excellent. While some violations have been reported, overall compliance, as measured by water demand, was as predicted. Water demand varies according to day of week, with Mondays and Wednesdays being the highest. Since April, Monday demand had climbed from below 30 to over 40 million gallons per day. On Monday June 24, the first day of Level II restrictions, demand was down to 36.2 million gallons. This tracked closely with Water Resources Department predictions of a 3 to 4 million gallon reduction. If Level I restrictions (which were effective December 3, 2001) had not been in place, demands of near or exceeding 50 million gallons per day could be expected.
Allan Williams, Director of Water Resources, has expressed admiration for the commitment of Greensboro residents and their understanding of the situation. "This is good news. It is clear that our customers understand the severity of the situation and how important their role is in preserving and protecting our water supply.” Williams further emphasizes “Complying with the restrictions greatly reduces consumption. The more people conserve, the longer our supply will last as we manage through the continuing drought.”
Level II Warning restrictions will remain in effect for at least 30 days.
