Big Sweep Day Will Include Lake Higgins Cleanup

Volunteers from the United States Service Command (USSC) and the City of Greensboro Water Resources and Parks & Recreation Departments will take advantage of Big Sweep Day (Saturday, September 21,  2002) to clean up the empty lakebed areas at Lake Higgins. Due to the drought conditions, water from Lake Higgins was emptied into Lake Brandt to preserve water levels and quality for the City’s drinking supply.  This left very wide shorelines around the public access areas, the main body of the lake, and the upper end of the lakes where creek beds feed the reservoir.

Water Supply Manager Steve Drew said “We’re fortunate to have volunteers from the USSC to assist with this cleanup of the exposed lakebed areas. They are trained in logistics and site cleanup and will be a tremendous help to us.” The cleanup is planned for Saturday, September 21. Volunteers will work in shifts from 8 am – 4 pm to clean up trash, cable off dead trees for shoring, cutting and removal, retrieve dead fish, and remove debris such as old Christmas tree fish habitats.
