City of Greensboro Police K9 Receives 2002 ACE Award
Bear, a Belgian Malinois Greensboro Police Department K9, handled by Officer Brett Davis, has won the 2002 American Kennel Club Award for Canine Excellence (ACE). The award is given to dogs that are AKC registered or registerable, and have performed one or more exemplary acts that have significantly benefited a community or individual. Bear joined the Greensboro Police Department in 1994 and was trained in obedience, agility, evidence searches, building searches, narcotics detection, tracking, handler protection, and criminal apprehension. During Bear's career he has located thousands of dollars worth of stolen property, as well as a variety of illegal drugs. He has an unerring nose for tracking operations and building-searches, and has helped locate murderers, armed robbers, rapists, fugitives, and missing persons. During the calendar year 2000 he tracked down over 80 felony suspects, more collars than most police dogs make in a lifetime.
Bear and Brett Davis accepted Bear’s award in December in Orlando, Florida. Bear received a cash award of $1000 and an engraved sterling-silver collar medallion. His name has been engraved on a plaque that hangs permanently in The American Kennel Club Library in New York City. Bear retired from the Greensboro Police Department in June 2002 after his long and successful career and lives with Brett Davis.
