Yard Debris Collection Codes Return to Normal March 17, 2003

The City of Greensboro yard waste codes will go back into effect on Monday, March 17. Yard waste requirements are temporarily relaxed until that time due to the large number of downed trees and limbs from the February 27 ice storm. All yard waste should be put as close to the curb as possible, but not in the street, to ensure the quick and efficient collection of debris. City crews will spend this week focusing on clearing major thoroughfares, and then begin work on residential areas.

The City will also open bids from private hauling firms this afternoon to select companies to assist with the removal of storm debris from residential areas. City officials estimate there are over 20,000 tons of debris to pick up throughout the city. This figure is more than 5,000 tons greater than the December 4 ice storm. The estimated completion date for removal of all storm debris is April 30, 2003.

Once yard waste requirements are reinstated, tree limbs and yard waste should be placed in containers that are no larger than 32 gallons and no heavier than 50 pounds, placed in clear plastic bags no heavier than 50 pounds, or tied in bundles not more than 5 feet long and no heavier than 50 pounds.
