Walter (Butch) Simmons Promoted to City Engineering & Inspections Director

Assistant City Manager Ben Brown announced today (Monday) the promotion of Walter (Butch) Simmons to the position of Engineering & Inspections Director. Simmons has served as Acting Director since December 2001.  He joined the City in 1975 as a Building Inspector.

Simmons attended Orlando College from 1966 to 1970, where he earned his Associate Degree in Business Management. 

Simmons is well recognized in his field and has the following professional affiliations: North Carolina Building Inspectors Association (Immediate Past President, Board of Directors, Vice President, President); North Carolina Building Inspectors Association, 1975; International Building Code Congress, 1984 – Present; current Chair of Building Code Fire Safety Committee; Past President, Board of Directors, North Carolina Building Inspectors Association.  His honors include: Edison Hubert Johnson Award, Four Times Recipient of Distinguished Service Award, and Building Inspector of the Year.  Simmons is certified as a North Carolina State Level III Building Inspector, a North Carolina State General Contractor, and a South Carolina State General Contractor.

In announcing his selection, Brown states, “Butch has done an outstanding job as Acting Director of the Engineering & Inspections Department for the past 16 months.  He demonstrated an extraordinary level of technical expertise and top qualities of leadership to get the job done well.  He knows where we have been as an organization, and he understands our vision----where we want to go.  The City Manager’s Office fully expects continued strong, innovative leadership from Butch.”

Simmons was selected from a field of 23 internal and external applicants. He begins his new position immediately and his salary will be $81,737.
