City of Greensboro Receives $200,000 Brownfield Assessment Grant

Greensboro Mayor Keith Holliday received notification today that the City of Greensboro has received a $200,000 Brownfield Assessment Grant from the Environmental Protection Agency to assess the environmental condition of an area generally centered on S. Elm Street south of Lee Street.

Brownfield sites are defined by the EPA as "abandoned, idled or under-used industrial and commercial properties where expansion or redevelopment is complicated by real or perceived contamination." The grant will also allow the City to begin a process of working with property owners and residents to identify future development opportunities in the area. City staff will be leading the effort to develop a vision for the site including adjacent neighborhoods, businesses, and downtown investors. Mayor Holliday states, "It's a great first step in taking on an area that will help downtown."

Greensboro was one of three cities in North Carolina selected for the grant. Nationwide, 117 assessment grants were awarded totaling $30.7 million.
