GTA Buses to Begin Operating at The Depot This Sunday

On Sunday, August 10 at 6 am, Greensboro Transit Authority (GTA) buses will begin operating from The Depot located at 236 East Washington Street.  The newly renovated facility will serve as the permanent home of GTA, as well as Greyhound/Trailways, Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation (PART) and local taxi service.  PART will begin operating from The Depot on Monday morning at 6 am and Greyhound/Trailways will begin operations there on Tuesday morning at 1 am.  The main concourse of The Depot will not be open until late August.

The reopening of The Depot signifies the completion of Phase I of a $19.2 million project to renovate the facility in order to allow local, regional and long-distance buses and taxi service to operate out of The Depot.  In addition to public transit, the city is also leasing 22,000 square feet of space for private use.  The second phase of the project, scheduled for completion in fall 2004, will enable the facility to operate passenger rail service.

A formal grand reopening ceremony for The Depot and groundbreaking for the passenger train facilities will be held on August 29 at 10:00am.  A Community Open House will take place on August 30 from 9:00am until 3:00pm for the public to celebrate the reopening.  This event will feature live music, fire trucks, clowns, free hot dogs, chips and drinks, Safety Town, rappelling demonstrations, displays and more.
