City Response to Flooding

A slow-moving storm caused significant rainfall in Greensboro early this morning leading to flooding in a number of low-lying areas, including Latham Park, South Elm-Eugene Street near Creek Ridge Road and Old Battleground Road north of Lake Brandt Road. Around 125 individuals were evacuated from apartments located at Maplewood Lane and Pinecroft Road and the ground floor of the apartments were condemned as well as two residences in the Latham Park area.

City personnel responded to this event by activating the City's Command Center at 4:15 am and bringing together representatives from Police, Fire, Emergency Management, Transportation, Inspections, Parks & Recreation, as well as the American Red Cross and other social service providers. Police intervention teams, including Spanish-speaking officers, were sent to the apartment complex at Maplewood and Pinecroft as well at to Latham Park to meet with flood victims and assist as needed. The department's Underwater Recovery Team was dispatched to check all stalled vehicles in the water to ensure that no one was trapped inside. Police also organized a community meeting open to all individuals affected by the storm to provide any assistance needed.

The American Red Cross has opened the Glenwood Recreation Center to serve as a shelter for those individuals that were evacuated from their homes. The shelter will remain open as long as necessary. For more information, contact the Red Cross at 333-5111.
