Greensboro Police Begin Geographic Reorganization

Greensboro Police Chief David A. Wray announced today a geographic reorganization of the Department's service areas and revision to the patrol work schedule. These changes are part of Chief Wray's initiative for improved accountability and manpower utilization in meeting the police service needs of our community.

The geographic reorganization increases the current service areas from three to four. Under the new configuration, the service areas will be renamed, Central, Southern, Western and Eastern. Each service area will be managed by a Police Captain and an Assistant Chief will be responsible for command over two service areas. The Central Service Area is a new addition and basically encompasses the Central Business District. The creation of the service areas will allow for more customized police services in conjunction with City Council initiatives.

The patrol work schedule will change from its current 4 days on 4 days off , non-rotational schedule of 10.5 hour workdays to a 4 days on 4 days off, rotational work schedule of 11 hour workdays. The new schedule will rotate on a two-shift basis. This means patrol officers will work two, four-day work periods on a shift before rotating to another shift. The new work schedule includes four work shifts per each twenty-four hour period. The new work schedule is intended to more efficiently deploy manpower, better distribute the agency's employee work experience, talents and abilities, match resources with needs, and place officers on-scene when the community needs them most. It will also enhance the welfare of our employees by creating opportunities for growth and development and produce a more well-rounded employee better capable of handling a broader spectrum of law enforcement issues.

Anticipated implementation of these changes will occur in mid-January. This will be done in conjunction with the implementation of several technology changes within the agency.
