Greensboro Crime Stoppers Program Reaches $10 Million Milestone

The Greensboro Police Department’s Crime Stoppers program has reached the $10,000,000 mark in recovered drugs and stolen property. This amount is a new record for Crime Stoppers programs in the state of North Carolina. Greensboro’s award-winning program is recognized as one of the leading programs of its kind by the Southeastern Crime Stoppers Association.

Greensboro’s Crime Stoppers program began in January, 1981 and since inception, has paid anonymous cash rewards to citizens who call and confidentially give information which leads to arrests and/or recovery of drugs and stolen property.  All monies paid in rewards are from community donations, therefore no tax dollars are used to fund the program.  All callers are confidential and anonymous and the program uses code numbers instead of names to track information.

Greensboro Police Chief David Wray says he is thrilled with the $10 million milestone. "The Crime Stoppers program continues to be an important tool in Greensboro’s progress in solving crimes.  The fact that we now lead the state in the amount of recovery is even more proof that we are succeeding."

Crime Stoppers Program Coordinator Sandy Tew agrees that the program is a vital tool for protecting our community. "This is truly a community-driven program with individuals providing the information and the funds to make it work.”
