2004 State Map Features Greensboro's Depot
The NC Department of Transportation (NCDOT) 2004 State Transportation Map is now available and features a photograph of the J. Douglas Galyon Depot on the cover. The Depot is the multi-modal transportation hub in downtown Greensboro named in honor of Board of Transportation Chairman Doug Galyon.
The August 29, 2003 reopening of The Depot signified the completion of Phase I of a $19.2 million project to renovate the facility in order to operate local, regional and long-distance buses and taxi service out of the facility. In addition to public transit, the City is also leasing 22,000 square feet of space for private use. The second phase of the project, funded with State and Federal funds, is scheduled for completion in late spring 2005 and will enable the facility to operate passenger rail service.
"This year's cover is an excellent example of the State's increasing investment in rail and public transportation," said State Transportation Secretary Lyndo Tippett. "We are proud to be a part of North Carolina's rail tradition, and look forward to working with local communities across the State to provide citizens with more transportation choices."
Greensboro Department of Transportation Director Jim Westmoreland echoes Secretary Tippett's remarks and notes that, "We are proud to be featured on the cover of the 2004 map and prouder still of the accomplishment that The Depot represents for Greensboro. The facility has exceeded our expectations and serves as the cornerstone of downtown revitalization, while marrying the city's past with its future."
The 2004 map is now available and highlights multi-modal transportation and the State's craft industry. The Greensboro Depot is one of several that NCDOT is renovating or restoring throughout North Carolina.
