Guilford Metro 9-1-1 Consolidation Seeing Results
New 9-1-1 VIPER and Mercom Technologies Increase Efficiency

The consolidation of emergency communication services for Guilford County and the City of Greensboro into Guilford Metro 9-1-1 (GM9-1-1), located at the Justice Complex, 1201 Coliseum Boulevard, is seeing positive results. On September 26, through a partnership with Embarq and Positron Public Safety Systems, Guilford Metro 9-1-1 deployed the first Positron “Voice-over-IP for Emergency Response” (VIPER) system in North Carolina. This state-of-the-art 9-1-1 phone system replaces the Positron Life Line 100 system that had been in place for more than a decade with automatic TDD detection, one-click contact buttons and transfers, advanced reporting capabilities, and other advanced features. The new system also allows for greater integration of other telephone products in the future.

Wesley Reid, Guilford Metro 911 Director, is pleased with the new 9-1-1 VIPER system. “The main reason the City and County agreed to combine services was to improve 9-1-1 service for the community. This new system is a step in the right direction and proof positive that the ongoing consolidation of functions, personnel, technology and systems is leading to improved efficiencies.”

In addition Guilford Metro 9-1-1 went live with a new 120 channel Mercom logging recorder installed by Carolina Recording Systems (CRS). This new system provides for the complete recording, electronic storage and digital playback of all 9-1-1 trunks, telephone lines and the Greensboro, Guilford, Burlington public safety radio system. The new recorder is also capable of expanding to some 240 recording channels.
