Police Investigation Updates Provided During Press Conference

GREENSBORO, NC (October 6, 2006) – City Manager Mitchell Johnson today announced a new initiative to provide as much transparency as possible in Greensboro city government. The initiative, a website called www.greensborocheckyourfacts.org, was launched with factual information pertaining to the Greensboro Police Department investigation. Johnson and Mayor Keith Holliday announced the new initiative during a press conference this morning and also provided an update on the investigation and the police chief selection process.

“This is a new way of doing business,” Johnson said. “This is a permanent website that is designed to share facts that we hope will help address areas of miscommunication about City efforts and issues. Our initial focus is on the Police Department investigation. The information currently on the site is intended to debunk some of the urban myths surrounding the investigation.”

The website includes a Myth vs. Fact section, as well as a number of documents related to the police investigation.

During the press conference, the City Manager provided an update on the selection process for a new police chief. Johnson said he is meeting with police officers during October to solicit their feedback regarding the desirable qualities and characteristics of a new police chief. Community meetings will also take place to gather input from the public. Johnson unveiled an aggressive timeline that would result in an offer being presented to the top applicant by the middle of March 2007.

Johnson also reviewed the investigations that have taken place by various agencies since former Chief David Wray’s resignation in January. Information about the scope of these investigations appears on the new website.
