Officer and Suspect Injured During Pursuit
GREENSBORO, NC -- (November 12, 2006) -- Greensboro Police detectives are investigating an incident that occurred early Sunday morning involving a police pursuit in which an officer was injured and a suspect shot. The suspect has been identified as Anthony Fields, 21, of Durham.
Both the suspect and the officer were transported to Moses Cone Hospital where they are being treated for non life-threatening injuries.
At approximately 1:20 am on Sunday, a police officer with the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Police Department reported seeing a vehicle strike a traffic sign near Lee and Aycock streets. The officer gave pursuit, but the suspect refused to stop. Assistance was requested from the Greensboro Police Department and an officer was assigned to assist. The pursuit traveled through the Glenwood community and then returned to Lee Street. The suspect vehicle was then involved in a crash with some traffic signs at Lee and Dillard. An assisting Greensboro police officer approached the vehicle, but the suspect struck the police vehicle and left the scene. The Greensboro officer was inured as the suspect fled and at least one shot was fired by the officer, striking the suspect.
The suspect traveled a short distance on Dillard Street before running off the road. He then fled on foot, but was apprehended by officers in a nearby wooded area.
This incident is being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Division and an administrative investigation is being conducted by the Internal Affairs Section. The name of the officer involved is not being released at this time.
