Solid Waste Transfer Station Opens
GREENSBORO, NC -- (November 15, 2006) -- The City of Greensboro held a Grand Opening today for the new Solid Waste Transfer Station located at 6310 Burnt Poplar Road. City Council members helped cut the ribbon for the transfer station and then toured the 36,000 square foot facility, along with City staff and engineer and construction representatives. Listen to Mayor Keith Holliday's remarks.
The transfer station is the final step in carrying out City Council’s 2001 commitment to close the White Street Landfill to solid waste. Beginning January 1, 2007, the White Street Landfill will no longer accept solid waste, which includes garbage from homes and businesses. Garbage must be taken to the transfer station where it will be reloaded into tractor-trailer trucks for transport to the Uwharrie Regional Landfill in Mt. Gilead, North Carolina. The White Street Landfill will remain open for construction debris and yard waste only.
Construction of the transfer station began in August 2005 and was finished in September 2006 at a cost of $8 million. Designed by HDR Engineering Inc. of the Carolinas and constructed by Laughlin-Sutton Construction, Inc., the station can process up to 1,200 tons of trash per day. Residents will pay more for trash collection due to the cost of constructing the station, hauling the trash to the Uwharrie landfill, and paying the tipping fee at the Uwharrie landfill. The City’s 2006-07 budget included a 1.25 cent tax rate increase for the transfer station and the 2007-08 budget will include an estimated .75 cent increase. When both increases are implemented, the owner of a $200,000 home will pay approximately $40 more per year or $3.34 per month.
Hours at the transfer station are Monday – Friday from 6 am to 6 pm and Saturday from 7 am to 1 pm.
