New Year Brings 30-Minute GTA Service on All Daily Routes

GREENSBORO, NC -- (December 14, 2006) – Beginning Tuesday, January 2, Greensboro Transit Authority (GTA) will offer 30-minute frequencies on all daily routes originating at the J. Douglas Galyon Depot. The long-awaited change is being implemented to reduce congestion on crowded buses and enhance service delivery based on recommendations from the GTA Board and approval by the City Council.

The routes that are moving to 30-minute frequencies are 4-Four Seasons, 7-Friendly Avenue, 8-Battleground Avenue, 9-West Market Street, 11-High Point Road, 13-Martin Luther King Drive and 14-Bessemer/Phillips Avenues. They join other daily routes that already offer half-hour service because of previous demand.

Libby James, Public Transportation Manager for the City of Greensboro, believes the new service frequencies will offer many benefits for current and new riders. "With some of our routes operating hourly, it made commutes for some challenging. If a patron missed their bus, then they had to wait a whole hour for another. But now, there will be buses departing every 30 minutes. Also, with more buses in service, we can alleviate crowded conditions on some of our fastest growing routes and our service options are even more flexible to meet riders’ needs."

Increased service frequencies also require additional vehicles. GTA has purchased 10 new low-floor buses that are arriving between now and December 20. Amenities offered by the new 35 passenger buses include the ability to kneel to 2 ½ inches off the ground for boarding, extending wheelchair ramps, bi-level seating and better fuel efficiency.
