Museum Renovations to Begin
Two Galleries to Close, Other Exhibits Open

GREENSBORO -- (December 29, 2006) -- Over the next two years, major renovations will be made at the Greensboro Historical Museum to create a new 10,000 square foot exhibition on Greensboro history.  To begin the renovation process, the Military History and Transportation galleries will be closed beginning Tuesday, January 2, 2007.

Seven galleries, including the new “Welcome to the Gate City,” as well as two historic houses, and First Presbyterian Church historic cemetery, remain open. Visitors can see four seats from the 1960 Greensboro sit-ins, rare items belonging to popular First Lady Dolley Madison, a letter from O. Henry to his daughter, a wide array of Civil War firearms, a Victorian-style parlor with elaborate furnishings, and more.

Media announcements will be made as additional galleries close during the next 24 months. The public can check on current exhibitions by calling 373-2043 or visiting the exhibits page at www.greensborohistory.org.

The Greensboro Historical Museum, a facility of the City of Greensboro and a Smithsonian Affiliate, is located downtown at the intersection of Summit Avenue and Lindsay Street. Admission is free, and free parking is available in two museum lots on Lindsay and Church streets. For more information, call (336) 373-2043 or visit www.greensborohistory.org.
