Library Reading Program Offers Summer Fun

GREENSBORO
, NC (June 6, 2006) – Summer Reading Helps Children Retain Skills

Director Sandy Neerman believes that the Library plays an important role in the education of our children, particularly during summer vacation. “I consider Summer Reading to be one of the most important programs sponsored by the Greensboro Public Library. Research shows that most children will lose reading skills and vocabulary if they do not keep reading during the summer months.”

Last year over 7,000 children enjoyed Summer Reading activities and the Library expects even more participants this year. All library branches are offering engaging programs featuring Paws, Claws, Scales & Tales with storytelling, crafts, magic, movies and more. Kids can sign up and receive a Reading Record to keep track of the books they read. Each month participants can bring their Reading Record into the library and receive a prize for reaching their reading goals.

The Library has included a special Teen Edition of Summer Reading this year. Events include Creature Feature movies, book discussions, craft activities and help with Guilford County’s required summer reading lists.

“This year we are pleased to welcome The Greensboro Regional REALTORS Foundation as Summer Reading Sponsors,” says Sandy Neerman. “Realtors have donated over $7,000 for books, prizes and programs. I would particularly like to thank the following realtors for this contribution: Allen Tate Realtors, Brown Investment Properties, Keller Williams of Greensboro, Prudential Carolinas Realty, Re/Max 1st Choice, Re/Max of Greensboro and Yost and Little Realty.”

To help your kids stay sharp this summer, pick up a Summer Reading Calendar and sign up at your nearest library branch. Additional information can be found on the library’s website www.greensborolibrary.org.
