Partnership Teaches Children About the Importance of Water

GREENSBORO – The City of Greensboro Water Resources Department and the Parks and Recreation Department will play host to area fifth-graders as part of the sixth annual “Water Festival,” Wednesday, April 11 from 9 am to 1 pm at Bryan Park / Lake Townsend Marina / Townsend Water Treatment Plant, 6275 Bryan Park Road, Browns Summit.  More than 400 local students will have the opportunity to participate in eight fun and exciting hands-on water activities that support the fifth grade curriculum.

Activities at the Water Festival will cover a variety of topics, which include the water cycle, fish identification, stream biology, erosion, and a water recovery demonstration by the Greensboro Police Dive Team.

The event also provides important training for the Guilford County Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) by testing their communications readiness.  “Events like the annual Water Festival allow ARES the opportunity to gain practical hands-on experience,” says Dave Collins, ARES Emergency Coordinator. In addition, student teachers from UNCG gain valuable teaching skills by giving scheduled demonstrations and by serving as group leaders. Student teachers also learn how to conduct field trips, which helps to maximize a child’s educational experience.
