Mayor Holliday Announces He Will Not Seek Re-Election

GREENSBORO – At a news conference held this afternoon, Greensboro Mayor Keith Holliday announced he would not seek re-election this November. In making the announcement, Mayor Holliday said, “It is with tremendous mixed emotions that I have made this decision. Other than the milestones of marriage and fatherhood, this chapter of my life - serving the citizens of Greensboro as their Mayor - has been my most gratifying work and service.”

Mayor Holliday has served as Mayor since 1999 and will complete his fourth consecutive term this November for a total of eight years. His tenure on the City Council began in 1995, when he first won an At Large Council seat, followed in 1997 by his term as Mayor Pro Tem after receiving the highest number of votes in the municipal election.

During his tenure, Holliday has helped lead the Council and the city through significant transition that resulted from changes in public policy and development of the community. Those accomplishments include:

  • Improving economic development / job creation policies
  • Growing the tax base and citizen population with good comprehensive planning
  • Decentralizing and adding to the Police department to create a true community policing program
  • Consolidating, downsizing, and creating efficiencies with City administration and operations to reduce the cost of government
  • Emphasizing regional intergovernmental cooperation both with sister cities and adjoining counties
  • Investing in the stabilization of the City’s water and sewer infrastructure
  • Reinventing the City’s procedures for solid waste disposal
  • Placing major focus on the heart of Greensboro and its neighborhoods with attention on an evolving downtown
  • Recognizing the Human Relations responsibility of City government that integrates a growing diverse citizenry
  • Planning and improving a local and state road system with special emphasis on public transportation

In making his announcement on Wednesday, Mayor Holliday emphasized that the teamwork approach to governing – the Council / Manager form of government – made possible the many changes that have resulted in Greensboro’s status as a progressive, growing metropolitan area.

Mayor Holliday said he looks forward to using the remainder of his current term to focus on important challenges that face Greensboro now and in the coming years. “Although I will be stepping down from my elected service, I have no intentions of ending my civic and community involvement,” Mayor Holliday said. “It has been an honor to help lead this dynamic and distinguished city. I am immensely excited about Greensboro’s future, as well as my own. I am confident that the future of this city is poised for many more great accomplishments and significant growth.”

Mayor Holliday thanked his wife, Cindy, his family, his employer First Citizens Bank, and the thousands of citizens who have supported his political career. He plans to continue his professional career with First Citizens Bank and to spend more time with his family.
