Highly Selective Tree Removal Scheduled in Latham Park
Due to Sewer Line Replacement

GREENSBORO – Highly selective tree removal will begin Thursday, April 26 in Latham Park along North Buffalo Creek to prepare for replacement of the sewer line that runs along the creek. The sewer line will be replaced with a larger diameter pipe to increase its capacity in order to reduce sanitary sewer overflows. The new sewer line will follow a route that minimizes the number of trees to be removed and goes from Latham Park near Hill Street to the North Buffalo Wastewater Treatment Plant. Tree removal is one of the first steps to clear the way for trenching that needs to be done for pipe placement.

The City of Greensboro Water Resources Department began the North Buffalo Sanitary Sewer Replacement Project in 2004 to increase the capacity of the sewer system to reduce the occurrence of sanitary sewer overflows. The first phase of the project involved constructing a new sewer pump station and force main to transfer wastewater from the near capacity North Buffalo Wastewater Treatment Plant to the Osborne Wastewater Treatment Plant. These two projects are nearly complete.

The total project cost is estimated at $48.6 million, and will conclude in mid-2008.
